Astros' Robel Garcia: Claimed by Astros
Garcia was claimed off waivers by the Astros on Saturday.Garcia finds himself on his fourth team of the offseason, having previously been a Red, a Met and an Angel. He returned from playing in Italy to flash a bit of promise in a short stint with the Cubs in 2019, hitting five homers in 31 games, but he also struck out in 43.8 percent of his plate appearances. He didn't get any big-league action in 2020 and is unlikely to contribute much this season unless he solves the whiff issues.
Angels' Robel Garcia: Dropped from roster
Garcia was designated for assignment Thursday. The Angels evidently didn't think too highly of Garcia, as they dropped him after picking up Jack Mayfield, a 30-year-old with a career .481 OPS. Garcia hit five homers in 31 games in his big-league debut for the Cubs in 2019 but also struck out 43.8 percent of the time, leading to a .208/.275/.500 slash line. He didn't get into any major-league games last season.
Angels' Robel Garcia: Lands with Halos
The Angels claimed Garcia off waivers from the Mets on Wednesday.Garcia will joining his fourth organization in seven months after previously being waived by the Cubs and then subsequently getting waived and claimed by both the Reds and Mets. Though Garcia didn't see any action at the MLB level in 2020 and is set to turn 28 years old in March, the power he offers from the middle infield is likely what makes him intriguing to clubs. He posted a .775 OPS over 80 plate appearances with the Cubs in 2019, and he was an above-average hitter over a larger sample of action in the Pacific Coast League that year, slashing .281/.361/.585 (121 wRC+) for Triple-A Iowa.
