Cubs' Jake Marisnick: Team may not use platoon
Chicago manager David Ross has indicated he may use Joc Pederson against both lefties and righties instead of deploying him in a platoon with Marisnick, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Marisnick could have some limited fantasy value if he bats regularly against lefties, but Ross indicated that Pederson might get an opportunity against southpaws, at least to start the season. Pederson has historically struggled against lefties, however, so Marisnick could work his way into a platoon situation at some point. The 29-year-old outfielder has a .730 OPS against lefties over the past three seasons, including a 1.099 mark in 17 plate appearances last year.
Cubs' Jake Marisnick: Added to roster
Marisnick was officially added to the Cubs' roster Sunday when the team designated Phillip Ervin for assignment, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports.Marisnick was fully expected to have a reserve outfield spot when he signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with Chicago on Feb. 11, but the release of Ervin locks him in. The right-handed Marisnick could form a left field platoon with left-handed Joc Pederson, who is also a new addition to the roster.
Cubs' Jake Marisnick: Signs with Cubs
Marisnick signed a one year, $1.5 million deal with the Cubs on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. The contract contains a mutual option for 2022.Marisnick has hit like a bench player throughout his eight-year MLB career, posting an overall .229/.281/.385 slash line, but his strong defense in center field has frequently earned him a fair number of at-bats. The Cubs signed the left-handed Joc Pederson in late January, and a platoon between the two would make some sense, potentially with Pederson starting in left against righties, Marisnick starting in center against lefties and Ian Happ starting at whichever position isn't taken.
